Netflix ups UK and Ireland subscription costs

Netflix has announced a price increase for the UK which will see the streamer’s top-tier offering cost £15.99 per month.

The company confirmed that the basic and standard plan will increase by £1 to £6.99 and £10.99 per month respectively, while the premium tier – which allows for 4K streaming and an increased number of active screens – will increase by £2 to £15.99.

The price change also impacts Ireland, where prices will be increased by €1 and €2 in sync with the UK.

Prices will increase immediately for new members, while existing subscribers will be notified 30 days before the price hike via email.

Netflix said that the price increase will allow it to continue investing in UK productions and content for the market. The UK is Netflix’s biggest production hub in Europe and its largest outside of North America.

In comments to Bloomberg, a spokesperson for Netflix said: “We have always been focused on providing our members both quality and clear value for their membership. Our updated prices reflect the investment we have made in our service and catalogue, and will allow us to continue making the series, documentaries and films our members love as well as investing in talent and the creative industry.”

This is the latest price increase for Netflix, which increased its subscription costs in the US and Canada earlier this year. Netflix’s top-tier offering in the US now costs US$19.99 per month.
