DAZN licences FTA boxing in Spain to Mediapro

Sandor Martin

Spanish rights agency Mediapro has signed a sublicensing deal with DAZN to air a number of bouts from its boxing portfolio on FTA broadcaster Gol TV.

In specific, the deal will be based around DAZN’s contracts with Matchroom Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions. Gol TV will broadcast fights on Wednesday and Friday, starting with Sandor Martin versus Joe Hughes on August 19 and followed two days later with a replay of last weekend’s Commonwealth title fight between Felix Cash and Jason Welborn.

Veronica Diquattro, who was recently appointed chief customer and innovation officer at DAZN and continues to lead the business in Italy and Spain, said: “This new alliance with Gol is part of our global strategy and helps us to reinforce our objective of increasing the general interest in the different sports competitions that fans can then enjoy live and on demand through DAZN.”

This is not DAZN’s first sublicensing deal in Spain, following last month’s agreement between the streamer and pubcaster RTVE for MotoGP coverage.

With a global rollout scheduled for September, DAZN is in a process of restructuring and re-evaluating its focus under acting CEO James Rushton. This entails doubling down in a number of markets, such as in Germany where it has acquired the rights to 90% of Bundesliga matches from 2021-22 to 2023-24, and reducing its commitments in others.
