Movistar+ Lite ‘exceeding expectations’ for Telefónica

Subscribers to Telefónica’s recently launched OTT TV service Movistar+ Lite are using the service for an average of two and half hours a day, with 80% of that time being spent on video-on-demand content, according to the Spanish telco.

According to Telefónica, the data from June on usage of the €8 a month service shows that it has received a positive reception.

“The degree of acceptance on the part of users has greatly exceeded our expectations and the level of consumption is very high, especially for a month like June, which make us very hopeful for the new season in September,” said Sergio Oslé, president of Movistar+, the group’s pay TV arm.

Telefónica debuted the new service at the beginning of June, offering eight linear channels and a raft of on-demand content and live sports, including the Wimbledon tennis championship.

The subscription covers reception on two devices. Customers can sign up for one month free of charge as a trial.

The service includes a range of comedy, entertainment and factual shows as well as series from Fox, TNT, Comedy Central and AMC including The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Deadand The Big Bang Theory, as well as Movistar+ originals including Instinto, Arde Madrid, Gigantes, El Embarcadero, Félix, Vergüenza, Hierroand the first Movistar+ original movie, the forthcoming Mientras dure la Guerra, directed by Alejandro Amenábar.

Movistar+ Lite is currently available via iOS and Android mobiles and tablets, the web, Samsung and LG smart TVs  and TVs with Android TV functionality from Sony, Phillips and Panasonic.

Users can watch content offline and Telefónica will shortly introduce cloud recording, seven-day catch-up and personal profiles.
