Viacom to take MTV Germany free-to-air in 2018

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) is making MTV Germany an unencrypted, free-to-air TV channel in Germany and Austria from January 2018.

Viacom described the move as “the next important step” for the channel, after started to make a live-stream of MTV Germany available online at MTV.de in March.

Recently, a new version of the MTV Play app for iOS and Android has also been released, giving viewers on mobile devices free access to the MTV live-stream and MTV Germany’s most popular shows.

“With more than 20 years of history in the German-speaking world, MTV stands for legendary music formats and international events such as the MTV EMA, MTV VMA or our successful MTV Unplugged series,” said VIMN’s general manager of Germany, Switzerland and Austria, Mark Specht.

“After the start of the free live-stream on MTV.de, which was excellently accepted by our viewers, the unencrypted distribution of MTV from the coming year is now the next important step.”
