Dolby Vision launches on Xbox games consoles

Microsoft has started rolling out Dolby Vision on its latest generation of games consoles.

Available now to members of Microsoft’s Insider programme – a tester scheme where users can sign up to be guinea pigs for new features before they are widely rolled out – the update will make the Xbox Series X and S the first ever consoles that offer Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

HDR format Dolby Vision adds dynamic metadata to images. This translates to more vibrant colours and brighter highlights. The consoles already support HDR 10, but this is a lesser format due to its static metadata.

The feature was previously announced by Microsoft in September with a planned rollout for 2021.

While the focus of the announcement surrounds gaming, the update will make the latest generation of Xbox consoles into more robust media streaming devices as well. Streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+ boast a significant amount of content in the higher fidelity formats.
