Harmonic and Elemental top multiscreen encoder market

Harmonic and its rapidly growing rival Elemental are locked in a “virtual tie” to lead the multiscreen encoder market, according to a recent assessment by ABI Research.

The research ranked Envivio in third place and noted that the encoding market is expanding both in terms of revenue and the number of companies competing in the market.

“Harmonic has a larger portfolio but is generally less disruptive in its innovation. Elemental, meanwhile, is executing on all fronts, including a recent (NAB April 2014) announcement that it was the first integrated into Ericsson’s EVE platform – somewhat of an upset of third ranking Envivio,” said ABI Research practice director Sam Rosen.

ABI praised Envivo for winning “significant customers” and returning to growth, “having overcome problems encountered late in 2012 and early 2013.”

It also said that cloud encoding platforms like encoding.com and Brightcove’s Zencoder are “finding significant use cases alongside traditional large system integrators such as Arris, Cisco, Ericsson and Harmonic as well as more nimble startups such as Elemental, Envivio and Ateme.”

Software and workflow oriented companies like Telestream and Digital Rapids round out the market, said ABI.
