SPN secures UEFA Euro rights for India and neighbouring markets

Ziggo for Champions League

Indian PayTV operator Sony Pictures Network has secured exclusive Indian rights to UEFA Euro 2024 and Euro 2028. No figure has been put on the deal which also covers UEFA European Qualifiers, Nations League and friendly fixtures (2022/23 to 2027/28).

The deal also gives SPN control of the UEFA rights in neighbouring territories Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives, and Sri Lanka. Games will be aired on SPN’s Sony Sports Network and via its streaming platform SonyLIV.

Commenting, Rajesh Kaul, chief revenue officer, distribution & international business and head – sports business, SPN India, said, “With the acquisition of exclusive TV and digital rights in the Indian sub-continent, we’re excited to bring the tournament to viewers in multiple languages, ensuring that fans can experience the thrill of one of the biggest events in football. UEFA commands some of the most premium football properties, and this association expands our football portfolio with an additional 1300 football matches making us the premier destination for European football in India.”

The new deal builds on an existing relationship between SPN and UEFA which covers the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League. In addition, SPN has rights to soccer properties such as Bundesliga and the Emirates FA Cup.

Cricket remains the most popular sport in India, but football has been growing in popularity. SPN rival Star India, owned by Disney, has the rights to the English Premier League while Viacom18 aired the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Euro 2024 will be hosted by Germany, between June 14 and July 14 next year.
