Sunrise extends 4K OTT TV service to Samsung smart TVs

Swiss operator Sunrise has extended the availability of what it describes as the first live 4K OTT TV app in the country.

The OTT service is now available on Samsung smart TVs, and customers signing up to Sunrise TV neo max along with a Sunrise internet subscription will receive a new 55-ience Samsung TV “as a Christmas gift”.

The service, Sunrise TV neo, is now available independently of the service provider’s other offers, can be used over the network of any Swiss internet provider and does not need a set-top box.

The Sunrise TV neo app for Samsung is based on the Huawei Envision video platform and offers more than 230 TV channels, of which more than 110 are in HD, with a promise of continuous expansion of the selection of HD channels.

Sunrise TV neo claims to be the only OTT TV app in Switzerland that supports UHD/4K and the offering currently includes the UHD channels Insight UHD, UHD 1, and Fashion TV UHD.

The new service, which is available on Samsung TVs from today, offers live or time-delayed TV streaming, cloud storage for up to 500 hours of recordings with the TV neo max option, seven days of catch-up TV, and a download feature for mobile devices. The app can be used on up to six devices at a time, including smartphones, tablets, PCs and Apple TV as well as via Samsung TV.

The app comes pre-installed, provided the Samsung TV is connected to the Internet. In order to use the app for Samsung TV, a TV neo max account is required. The service is available for CHF20 a month, and the subscription is flexible, with no minimum contract duration, according to Sunrise.

Sunrise cited research commissioned from LINK that showed that while the majority of Swiss TV viewers watch TV through a cable or IPTV set-top box, some 54% would be willing to switch in the case of a provider offeringTV as an app rather than via a set-top box.

Sunrise initially announced the service in May, then available via iOS devices and PCs to Sunrise customers. Sunrise launched with a promotion giving away Apple TV 4K devices and a year’s free subscription to customers that signed up between ay 10-June 4.
