Turner is launching superhero-focused kids channel Toonami on African pay TV platform Kwesé TV.
As of June 1, the network will launch in Kwesé’s English-language markets outside South Africa.
The network focuses on superhero cartoons, featuring popular DC Universe characters such as Batman, Superman, The Green Lantern, plus the Ben 10 and Thundercats franchises.
Toonami’s launch comes after Turner signed a multi-territory agreement with Kwesé parent Econet Media for channels such as CNN International and Cartoon Network.
“We are pleased with the addition of Toonami to the Kwesé bouquet as it further diversifies our robust entertainment experience and programme offering outside of South Africa,” said Turner Southern Europe and Africa VP and general manager Pierre Branco.
“With its clear positioning and strong franchising connections, we are convinced that Toonami will build a strong fan base around the most popular superheroes. Turner will meet the growing demand for premium quality superhero content on the continent.”
Separately, Turner Asia Pacific (APAC) has promoted Clement Schwebig to CFO, with senior VP of finance Shitiz Jain exiting next month.
Schwebig will keep his post as SVP of business development, licensing and China, while adding the new responsibilities.
He joined Turner in 2013, and has led efforts to create new local and pan-regional channels and develop local content, and has overseen a digital growth strategy.
