Consumer electronic devices increasing OTT share
 


The rate of consumption of over-the-top video on consumer electronics devices will increase rapidly over the next five years, according to new research.

Currently, about 6% of OTT viewing is conducted on a connected CE device. That proportion will rise to 27% in 2016, according to IMS Research. It adds that by end-2016, 133 million TV homes will be accessing OTT services via their pay TV set-top.

Companies effective in establishing partnerships with CE suppliers and increasing global usage of their apps on connected CE devices are quickly becoming leaders in the OTT market, IMS said. IMS analyst Anna Hunt said: “Netflix’s aggressive pursuit of increasing the geographic reach of its OTT service illustrates to the need for OTT service providers to expand their serviceable target market if they want to grow revenues.”
