Ponnet: scale key for operators looking to commission content

Platform operators are showing a lot of interest in commissioning content, according to Wim Ponnet, chief strategy and commercial officer, Endemol Shine Group, but smaller operators are still challenged to deliver original content.

“It all boils down to budgets. Operators are interested. Content is costly, but I think operators are definitely waking up to the model and understanding that investing in IP and content is more and more important,” he told DTVE at the recent Cable Congress.

Ponnet said scale is important for operators hoping to get involved in content. He said that global streaming players are spending a lot but platforms like Comcast are also big content players.

Ponnet said he had “never been more excited about this space” with more and more commissioners of content emerging and opportunities for producers to self-publish to some extent as well.
