HD Penetration will more than double in five years

The penetration of HD TVs is set to rocket between 2011 and 2016, according to new research. The 2011 figure of 290.9 million HD TVs globally will soar to 666.5 million by end-2016, according to Informa Telecoms & Media. The global penetration level will rise from 23% to 48% accordingly.

Measured by penetration level, the US, New Zealand, Hong Kong, France and Australia will be, in order, the leading HD territories.

By 2016, several countries will be at the point where most or all viewers are watching HD, Informa notes. The switch off of analogue signals will also likely herald a new wave of SuperHD and UltraHD services as HD becomes standard.

In comparison 3DTV penetration will grow from 1% to 17% between 2011 and 2016. That equates to 16.8 million and 236 million sets respectively. Connected TV penetration rates will come in at 5% and 42%, or 68 million and 579.1 million, across the same measurement period.
Measured by penetration level, the US, New Zealand, Hong Kong, France and Australia will be, in order, the leading HD territories.
