Germany on course to become Western Europe’s largest SVOD market

Germany will have more SVOD subscriptions than the UK by the end of this year, according to research from Digital TV Research. The gap will then grow through until 2029, at which point Germany will have 56.9m subs compared to the UK’s 48.7m.

This finding is part of DTVR’s overall analysis of the Western European SVOD market. Looking at the region as a whole, the firm predicts there will be 273 million SVOD subscriptions by 2029, up from 210 million by end-2023.

From the 63 million additions in that time period, the UK will contribute 6 million, Germany 12 million, Spain 9 million, Italy 10 million and France 11 million. A further 15 million subs will be added by smaller territories across Western Europe.

Presenting his upbeat findings, Simon Murray, principal analyst at DTVR, said: “The UK is the most mature SVOD market in Western Europe. Germany, France, Italy and Spain will each add more subscriptions than the UK over coming years.”

Currently, leading SVOD players in Germany include Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Netflix, Sky-owned WOW and sports streamer DAZN.
