Elisa reveals keys to success for Elisa Elamus super-aggregated TV service

Estonian pay TV operator Elisa celebrates successful rollout of next-generation Elisa Elamus service

Launched in August 2021, Elisa Elamus (which translates to Elisa Experience in English) is a new super-aggregated multiscreen platform based on Android TV OS Operator Tier. It is available via DVB-C (cable), DVB-T (terrestrial), IPTV and on an exceptionally wide choice of OTT platforms and devices.

“We were looking for a new service platform,” says Brigita Brjuhhanov, TV Development Team Lead at Elisa, during a webinar masterclass hosted by Omdia. “Our old TV services were mostly end of life, and we had several set-top boxes for different networks.”

“We knew we wanted to deliver a next-generation TV service which provides a seamless experience for viewers to access on a wide range of devices with the STB at the service’s core.”

Elisa recognised the fundamental trend being seen across the industry, where the experience of a pay TV service extends harmoniously to become one that users can take with them across whatever device they are using. Elisa’s priority was to create a dynamic and user-friendly service, while giving maximum flexibility to subscribers, enabling them to benefit from a unified UX across a wide choice of devices.

The company met with TV UX software specialists 3SS in Spring 2019. Brjuhhanov shares that as the two companies explored what comprises advanced user experiences, they “were both looking in the same direction.”

Elisa appointed 3SS as prime integrator and selected Technicolor Connected Home’s PEARL set-top box. The proven combination of Technicolor and 3SS technology would be the future-ready foundation on which to launch Elisa Elamus, while content and revenue protection from NAGRA ensured that the system is secure.

The PEARL STB platform provides premium 4K Ultra HD 2160p/60 and High Dynamic Range (HDR) OTT TV services in a small and customisable design. This advanced hybrid DVB/IPTV/OTT device benefits from the latest technologies, including a powerful dual-core processor, ready to support enriched services. It also embeds Technicolor TV Data Analytics, providing Elisa with a detailed view of the operational STB performance covering the hardware, software and apps usage.

Mercedes Pastor, SVP Technicolor Connected Home Eurasia highlights the opportunity for operators to “meet customers’ demand for the latest entertainment and content services by rapidly deploying Android TV STBs, like PEARL, and enabling seamless delivery of video, music streaming, online gaming applications and live broadcasting services.”

Discussing 3SS’s role in the launch, Chief Product Officer Pierre Donath says that the Elisa was looking for a company to “collaboratively design, define and develop an experience that satisfies customers’ needs by having all services aggregated in one place, and also the operator’s needs by enabling business flexibility, while streamlining operations.”

Brjuhhanov shares that feedback since the launch has been very positive, with subscribers sharing their enthusiasm for the new service on social media.

The full panel discussion with Brigita Brjuhhanov (Elisa), Mercedes Pastor (Technicolor Connected Home), Pierre Donath (3SS) and Tim Pearson (NAGRA), moderated by Maria Rua Aguete (Omdia) is available on demand now. Watch it to learn more about how all parties worked together, and the challenges they overcame, to jointly deliver this successful TV service on Android TV OS and all other platforms.
