Constantin seeks slice of Bundesliga rights

Sport 1Constantin Media chairman Dieter Hahn wants to take part in the next round of bidding for German Bundesliga premium football rights for Constantin’s Sport 1 Plus pay TV channel.

Hahn told the Handesblatt newspaper that he wanted to secure a package for Sport 1 Plus that could be retailed for less than €10. He said there was a need for more differentiated offerings of German football.

The next round of rights bidding, covering the 2017-21 seasons, is expected in 2016.

Hahn said he was looking for a set of rights that would offer a more limited set of games than that provided by Sky Deutschland, possibly including live rights to some weekend games and highlights. According to Handesblatt, former Leo Kirch associate Hahn did not rule out paying up to €100 million for Bundesliga rights. Sky Deutschland paid about €480 million a season for the 2013-17 rights.
