Global IPTV subs pass 60 million

Global IPTV subscribers numbered close to 60 million by the end of last year, according to research by Point Topic.

The last three months of the year saw the biggest quarterly increase in IPTV subscribers to date, according to the researchers. Over 2011 as a whole, IPTV services attracted over 12 million new subscribers.

“Globally ARPU increased by just under 2% in the year, total revenues were up over 30% and with the continued subscriber growth it looks like a very strong positive set of indicators,” said Point Topic CEO Oliver Johnson. “It is an extremely competitive market however. The technical path to deployment is well trodden but in combination with high equipment and content costs, and the increasing competition in the market IPTV is not a ‘slam dunk’ for operators.”
