BBC hires digital media chief, announces BBC One HD launch

British public broadcaster the BBC has hired Major League Gaming boss Ralph Rivera as director of digital media for future media and technology. Rivera, who reports to director of BBC future media and technology Erik Huggers, replaces Simon Nelson, BBC controller of multiplatform commissioning. He joins the corporation from the New York-based gaming site and also previously worked at AOL.

Separately, the broadcaster has outlined its plans to develop a big screen version of its online TV service iPlayer for mobile phones. It hopes to develop the service to allow more consumers to watch the iPlayer on their mobile phones.

The BBC has separately said that the HD version of flagship channel BBC One will launch on November 3 across the Freesat, Freeview, Sky and Virgin Media platforms.
