The 2010 World Cup has become the largest globally consumed sporting event seen on content delivery network provider Akamais platform to-date, the company said. Daily World Cup-related traffic on the Akamai network has been consistently above 500Gbps, with the highest peaks at nearly 1Tbps of traffic.
World Cup-related traffic to AkamaiÂs network peaked at 969Gbps during last FridayÂs match between the US and Slovenia. During the match, requests to World Cup sites increased nearly 250%. Akamai said Europe has remained the highest global region consistently in terms of traffic, with the UK tending to be the biggest draw. Â
