SES to invest in MEO broadband company

Satellite operator SES has said it will invest US$75m (€50m) in Channel Islands-based broadband satellite venture O3b Networks.

O3b plans to bring satellite-delivered internet connectivity to developing countries. The company plans to launch eight satellites into medium earth orbit and use Ka-band frequencies to cover 70% of the world’s population. Existing investors in the company include Google, Liberty Global, HSBC and North Bridge Venture Partners.

SES will also provide engineering and commercial support to help the company’s development.
