Foreign-language channels could be banned from Russian cable platforms.
Local reports indicate that the Federal Service for Communications, IT and Mass Communication Oversight sent letters to its regional departments stating that cable networks should stop broadcasting foreign TV channels that do not have relevant licences. The legal situation in Russia means that the majority of foreign channels do not currently have relevant licences. Under current rules, foreign channels are required to create legal entities in Russia in order to obtain licences, but foreign companies, or Russian companies controlled by foreign investors, have no rights to set up mass media companies in the country.
