Swisscom in rural fibre initiative

Swisscom has signed a contract with the municipality of Pfyn in north-east Switzerland to build a fire-optic network.

Swisscom said it saw the project as an opportunity to gain experience in a municipality outside the country’s main urban centres.

Swisscom and the Pfyn authorities will collaborate in creating a fibre network, to be laid by the local electrical utility, in the district of Dettighofen, which is underserved by TV and cable compared with other parts of the municipality. Swisscom is already working on two other pilot projects in Freiburg and Neyruz as well as laying FTTH networks in Zurich, Basle, Geneva, St Gallen, Berne and Lausanne.
