Zon to launch 1Gbps broadband in September

Portuguese pay-TV provider Zon Multimédia plans to launch 1Gbps and 200Mbps broadband internet services in September.

The operator said it had now concluded tests of equipment for the ultra-fast services. The launch of the new offers are expected to be a European first for the operator. Globally, only Japan and South Korean have hitherto launched 1Gbps services.

Zon launched 50Mbps and 100Mbps services in January, currently available to a footprint of 1.4 million homes in Portugal. In July the operator launched Zon Fibra, a set of triple-play bundles with 100Mbps or 50Mbps broadband, HD services, fixed voice, video-on-demand and mobile broadband. The new ultra-fast services will be sold under the same brand in selected areas.
