BBC iPlayer on course for ‘best year ever’

The BBC says that its iPlayer on-demand service is “well on track for its best year ever”. Fuelled by major events such as the Queen’s state funeral, the Commonwealth Games and the final of Women’s Euro 2022, the platform has reported 1.65 billion programme streams (up 7%) for the third quarter of the year (July to September).

The day of the Funeral, Monday 19 September, generated over 25m streams, including 10.1m for the funeral coverage. Aside from the above-mentioned events, new drama was popular, with Marriage, The Control Room, and Crossfire all among the top episodes in Q3. Returning series The Capture, was among the top boxsets, while series such as Celebrity MasterChef and Top Gear were also prominent.

Dan McGolpin, director of BBC iPlayer, said: “The nation turns to the BBC for the big moments and for increasing numbers of people that means turning to BBC iPlayer.”

He also cited the breadth of the platform’s content: “BBC iPlayer provided something for everyone, from original drama such as Marriage to the stunning landscapes of Frozen Planet II and the joyous return of Strictly Come Dancing.”
