Six in 10 Spanish households paying for OTT video

Six out of 10 Spanish households are paying for online audiovisual content, according to the latest study by markets regulator the CNMC.

CNMC online videoAccording to the watchdog, 59.2% of homes accessed OTT pay video services such as Netflix, HBO or Amazon Prime Video at the end of 2022, representing growth of 7.4% year-on-year. The number has increased fivefold since 2016, according to the regulator.

The CNMC found that 47% of Spaniards consumed audiovisual content online at least once a week at the end of 2022, up 3% year-on-year.

Movies (75.8%) and series (64.2%) were the most-watched genres of content online.

Series overtook news in the course of the year, with the proportion of those watching news content falling from 64.3% to 61.7%.

Spaniards aged 10-15 spent 2.4 hours daily watching user-generated video sites at weekends and during holidays, alongside 1.6 hours watching VOD. By contrast, those aged over 65 spent 3,6 hours a day watching over-the-air free TV, and barely watched online video.
