Ofcom reworks penalty payments system

Ofcom has revised its own guidelines for imposing penalties on broadcasters that break the UK’s broadcasting rules and regulations.

The UK communications regulator said the revisions were necessary because the previous system was unnecessarily complex and inflexible and did not set adequate deterrents to channels and has tweaked the rules accordingly.

BT, Talk Talk, Virgin Media and Sky all gave Ofcom input ahead of the revisions being made and Ofcom said responses to its consultation were split evenly in favour of changing the rules and maintaining the status quo. Broadcasters can access the full guidelines on Ofcom’s website.
