RTR taps Megafon for CDN ahead of Sochi

Russian state broadcaster RTR has tapped telecom operator Megafon to provide CDN services for internet video coverage of the Winter Olympics from Sochi.

Megafon operates a network of cities covering Russia’s major cities, with a capacity of about 250Gbps.

RTR’s deputy director of IT Alexey Skvortsov said RTR intended to deliver HD-quality video to every Russian city during the games.

Separately, Russian service provider Rostelecom has tapped technology provider Net Insight’s Nimbra platform to deliver live video feeds from Sochi to Moscow for a major national broadcaster.

Rostelecom will deploy Net Insight’s Nimbra platform in order to serve our customers’ contribution needs during the upcoming sporting event,” says Igor Kachalov, senior specialist, service TV and radio company department at Rostelecom. “The Nimbra platform not only provides a highly stable JPEG2000 compression solution but also ensures advanced protection mechanisms. These benefits in combination with Net Insight’s and Kontur-M’s professional services were imperative in selecting the Nimbra platform.”
