Sistema appoints telecommunications and media chief

Russian MSO Sistema has appointed Ron Sommer to lead the company’s telecommunications and media business. Sommer becomes vice-president of Sistema and head of its telecommunications and media business, which includes triple-play operator Comstar and mobile operator MTS. In 2005, Sommer  was elected to Sistema’s board of directors as an independent director.

Zappware delivers designer portal to Telenet

Interactive TV specialist Zappware has launched an interactive portal for designer brands on Belgian pay-TV platform Telenet. Based on Zappware’s iCatalogue service, ICONTV is an interactive catalogue that uses video, images and text to promote designer products and services. 

Unitymedia upgrades more towns

German cable operator Unitymedia is upgrading its network in the towns of Warstein, Rüthen and Umgebung and will begin offering triple-play services in these areas at the end of May. The upgrade covers about 9,300 additional households. Unitymedia has committed itself to bringing broadband services to rural areas in North-Rhine Westphalia and Hesse. 

UPC Netherlands launches triple-play in more towns

Cable operator UPC Netherlands is introducing broadband internet and telephony in the municipalities of Zaltbommel, Maasdriel and West Maas & Waal. The launch of the new services follows the launch of digital TV in the municipalities. UPC Netherlands currently has 670,500 digital TV, 690,000 broadband and 590,000 telephony customers. 

Vivendi decides against Digital Plus bid

French media group Vivendi has decided against submitting an offer for Prisa-owned pay-TV platform Digital Plus. Spanish daily Expansion, quoting Vivendi’s CEO Jean-Bernard Levy, said the company would only renew its interest in the operator if it became economically and strategically viable.
