Google extends Fiber project to Salt Lake City

Google FiberGoogle said that as of yesterday, it is ready to bring its high-speed broadband and TV service initiative, Google Fiber, to Salt Lake City.

The metro area will join Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville and Raleigh-Durham as areas that are in the “design phase” of building the new fibre network, said Google.

“Over the coming months, we’ll work closely with these cities to map out just where to lay our fiber-optic cables. There’s a lot of work ahead; as the new Associate City Manager for Google Fiber in Salt Lake City, I can’t wait to see what the city does with superfast Internet,” said Google Fiber executive Devin Baer.

In January, Google said that it is launching its Google Fiber internet to 18 more US cities across four new metro areas – Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville and Raleigh-Durham. At the time it also said it was continuing to explore bringing Fiber to Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Antonio and San Jose.

Google first started experimenting with Gigabit-speed broadband almost five years ago and now offers internet and fibre-powered TV services in Kansas City, Austin and Provo.
