Mediapro’s Gol Mundial surpasses 300k subscribers in four days

Spanish media outlets are reporting that sports rights agency Mediapro’s dedicated FIFA World Cup streaming platform Gol Mundial has attracted 300,000 subscribers in the first four days of the event. The €19.99 platform presumably benefited from a strong start by the Spain team, which beat Costa Rica 7-0 in its opening group fixture.

Breaking the data down further, around 43% of users are watching the matches via mobile devices and 50% via Smart TV. Mobile device usage increases for early fixtures, presumably because fans are still stuck in work offices.

Mediapro announced plans for its SVOD streaming in October, having acquired rights to the Qatar-based event in January 2019. Gol Mundial features all 64 matches from the tournament, including Spain’s matches. The service also includes historic matches and VOD content.

Gol Mundial is not the only way viewers can watch the World Cup. Mediapro has also licensed all 64 fixtures to Telefónica-owned pay TV operator Movistar+ and some fixtures are on pubcaster RTVE. In total, 10.8 million people watched Spain’s opening game across RTVE channel La 1 and other platforms.
