Spain’s Mediapro launches dedicated FIFA World Cup 2022 OTT platform

Spanish sports rights agency, broadcaster and producer Mediapro is launching a bespoke SVOD streaming platform to house its rights to the FIFA 2022 World Cup. The company bought the rights to the Qatar-based event and a few other FIFA competitions in January 2019.

The new platform will be called Gol Mundial and will feature all 64 matches from the tournament, including Spain’s matches. Customers can secure access to the service for €19.99, without having to go through any third party operators.

The service, which is described as a 24-hour channel, will also include historic matches and VOD content. It is not clear yet whether the channel will provide its own event production and presenters – or whether it will continue after the event.

Gol Mundial is not the only way Spanish viewers can see the World Cup. Mediapro has also licensed all 64 fixtures to Telefónica-owned pay TV operator Movistar+ and some fixtures will be aired on pubcaster RTVE. This year’s event will take place between November 20 and December 18 in Qatar.
