Disney+ surpasses US$2 billion for consumer spend

Disney+ has surpassed US$2 billion in lifetime consumer spend via mobile app stores, claims a new report.

According to data analytics firm App Annie, Disney+ is one of only 35 apps to have surpassed the milestone, and is 1 of only 5 video streaming providers to surpass US$2 billion alongside Netflix, YouTube, Tencent Video and iQIYI.

The US is the largest market for Disney+, followed by the UK. The report notes that success has been driven by the release of high-profile exclusives including Pixar’s Luca along with overall strong IP through the Walt Disney Company, Pixar and Marvel Studios.

Disney is yet to reveal its year-end subscriber numbers for Disney+, but the company recently surpassed 100 million overall streaming subscribers in the US. Disney+ will also expand into 42 additional markets in EMEA this summer.

The report goes on to examine consumer streaming habits on mobile devices, which has been accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic. In the US, consumers spent 4.2 hours each day on their mobile devices in 2021, compared to only 3.1 hours watching TV.
