Smart TV sales up 20% in Germany

Smart TV sales in Germany increased by 20% in 2020.

According to figures from GdfK, around 6.6 million smart TV sets were sold in the country, an increase from 5.5 million in 2019.

This increase in sales is reflected in the market share of smart TV sets which enable the use of apps or catch up TV, with such sets up 6% year-over-year to make up 83% of TVs in use. This figure only stood at 65% in 2016, reflecting just how much TV is increasingly becoming oriented around internet connectivity.

The report notes that a total of 57 million smart TVs have been sold in Germany since 2012.

As LED and OLED tech becomes cheaper to produce, larger TVs are also increasingly being sold. Sets with a screen size of more than 55-inches grew by 32% year-over-year to 3.2 million in 2020. Even larger TVs of more than 65-inches in size also surpassed 1 million units, up 49% from 880,000 in 2019.

Commenting on the report, Carine Chardon, managing director of Deutsche TV-Plattform said: “The restrictions in public life due to the Covid 19 pandemic have created momentum in the TV set business in 2020. Nevertheless, the increased sales figures are good news for manufacturers and retailers – and also for content providers, because the rising market penetration of smart TVs increases the basis for the introduction of innovative services.”
