ESPN takes EXP esports to the X Games

Esports are making a comeback to the X Games, ESPN has confirmed.

Following a three year absence, the Disney-owned sports broadcaster said that the EXP Invitational qualifiers taking place on June 29 will lead into the Apex Legends event at the X Games, August 2-3.

Twenty 3-player teams will be competing for a prize pool of US$150,000 (€133,890).

The company also confirmed that the competition will be broadcast live across multiple digital platforms including the ESPN app. A tape-delayed highlights show will air on ESPN 2 on August 10.

The news comes shortly after ESPN announced the launch of EXP, its esports initiative.

“Leaning in to esports represents ESPN’s focus on serving sports fans and expanding audiences,” said Justin Connolly, executive vice president of Disney & ESPN affiliate sales and marketing. “We remain committed to serving gaming fans across all platforms and content types, and Apex Legends is a great title to showcase EXP’s vision of offering world-class live esports events anchored by storytelling and multi-platform distribution.”
