Sky Deutschland to air 25 World Cup matches in UHD TV

Sky Deutschland is to broadcast the top match of each match- day from the forthcoming football World Cup in Russia in Ultra HD.

Sky said it would broadcast 25 matches in the format in total, including all matches involving the German national team, both semi-finals and the final of the competition.

Sky has struck an agreement with SportA, the sports rights agency of public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, granting it the exclusive rights to broadcast the top match of the day live in Ultra HD. Sky Sport UHD will be available to all Sky customers in Germany that have a Sky+ Pro set-top and are capable of receiving and viewing UHD signals.

Holger Enßlin, managing director, legal, regulatory and distribution at Sky Deutshland, said that its delivery of “the first and exclusive broadcast” of the tournament in UHD underpinned Sky’s “role as a pioneer and driver of innovation in German television”.

Sky has regularly shown broadcasts of Bundelsiga football matches in UHD, along with matches from UEFA Champions League competition. Sky launched its 4K UHD set-top in late 2016, along with the launch of two channels covering Bundesliga and Champions League games respectively.
