Telenor-owned Nordic pay TV provider Canal Digital is to develop a next-generation TV service based on the Android TV platform, joining the growing number of operators adopting Google’s technology to deliver advanced services.
Representatives of Canal Digital delivered a presentation as part of the Google Android TV Summit at the IBC show in Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago, and revealed that the operator was planning to use the Android TV platform to deliver a next-generation services.
Canal Digital said details of the platform would be revealed over time and that the launch date would be announced later this year.
“We are excited to be creating a next generation TV experience. Being built on the Android TV platform, it will offer the customers a totally new TV experience, with seamless integration between direct TV, streaming and other services. With this platform, we will meet our customers’ rapidly changing demands,” said Ragnar Kårhus, CEO of Canal Digital.
There has been significant adoption of Android TV among operators – including operators in the Nordic region – over the last year, driven in part by changes made to the platform by Google.
Finnish operator DNA’s DNA TV-hubi offering, launched in August, is based on the Android TV platform, while Denmark’s YouSee recently launched recently launched an Android TV app as a multi-room service for homes with a YouSee set-top.
