A new Google-developed app for watching and sharing YouTube videos with friends, called Uptime, has gone live on the Apple App Store.
The project was borne out of Google’s in-house start-up incubator, Area 120, which launched last year to support new projects being developed by Google staff.
Uptime, which is available now on iOS devices, is designed as a place for viewers to share their favourite YouTube videos and “bring friends together to watch, chat and have fun.”
Users can watch videos together with friends and chat at the same time. They can also share and curate YouTube videos and get daily video recommendations from friends and people they follow.
The app is available to download and use with an invite code, which Uptime has posted to its Twitter page.
The news comes weeks after YouTube unveiled details of its much-anticipated television streaming service, YouTube TV. The service is set to go live “soon” in the US with a line-up of more than 40 channels, including the biggest US broadcast networks.
