Sony reported a “significant increase” in television sales in the three months ending September 30, helping sales in its home entertainment and sound division to climb 7% year-on-year.
The firm said that unit sales of LCD TV increased significantly in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific, but were partially offset by a significant decrease in unit sales in Latin America.
TV sales increased 14.7% year-on-year to JPY199.7 billion (US$1.83 billion), due to the sales increase and the favourable impact of foreign exchange rates.
Overall, the firm reported a 7.2% year-on-year increase in revenues to US$17.4 billion, which Sony attributed to the contribution of the PlayStation 4, a significant increase in devices segment sales primarily due to the strong performance of image sensors, as well as the impact of foreign exchange rates.
However, an operating loss of JPY85.6 billion (€622 million) was recorded, compared to operating income of JPY13.9 billion in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year.
