Google planning to invest in trans-Pacific submarine cable

Google is planning to join five other companies to invest in a new trans-Pacific submarine cable connecting the west coast of the US to Japan.

The project, known as FASTER, comes with an estimated cost of US$300 million (€225 million) and is designed to address growing demand for broadband and mobile content.

The group plan to lay a cable system with an initial capacity of 60Tbps. The other partners in the project are China Mobile International, China Telecom Global, global Transit, KDDI and SingTel and the cable will be laid by NEC.
