Unexpected boost for LCD market in first half

The global LCD TV panel market saw growth of year-on-year growth 3% in the first six months of 2014, despite widespread expectations of a decline, according to research by IHS Technology.

Although the growth was less than the 9% growth recorded for the first six months of 2013, most observers had expected a decline, according to IHS. Possible contributory factors include a boost from the football World Cup, continued economic growth in North America and a subsidy programme initiated by the Mexican government.

“What a surprising result this was, as the television industry doubted that shipments could increase during this time,” said Ricky Park, director for large displays at IHS.

“It was unclear whether any growth would occur because of signs earlier in the year that appeared to be discouraging. However, the market has righted itself, to everyone’s delight.”
