World Cup final sets German TV viewing record

ARD World Cup tweetYesterday’s football World Cup final, which saw Germany triumph over Argentina, broke German viewing records with 34.65 million tuning into the match on public broadcaster ARD.

According to figures released after the game, Germany’s 1-0 victory attracted a domestic audience share of 86.3%.

The viewer number beats Germany’s previous TV audience record, set last week during Germany’s 7-1 semi-final victory over Brazil.

This game drew an audience of 32.57 million viewers and an audience share of 87.8%.

According to Twitter stats released today, last night’s football final generated 32.1 million Tweets. At the final whistle, 618,725 related Tweets per minute were logged – a Twitter record for an event.

In the UK the World Cup final reportedly attracted a peak audience of 20.5 million – 16.7 million on BBC1 and 3.8 million on ITV, which both broadcast the match live.
