QVC Extra launches on local TV multiplex

Home shopping channel QVC Extra has launched on the Freeview digital-terrestrial TV platform in the UK on the multiplex set up to deliver local TV services.

The channel, available 24 hours a day, showcases the best of QVC’s product range in one-hour long themed or branded programmes. QVC Extra was previously available to Freeview homes with internet-connected TVs but, through an agreement with Comux UK, the company set up to provide broadcasting infrastructure to local TV services on the terrestrial platform, has now extended its reach by 12.3 million homes.

Comux’s sale of capacity for two national channels not ringfenced for local TV – part of its original licence agreement with regulator Ofcom – is designed to create an additional revenue stream for its local TV services.

“We are delighted with the launch of QVC Extra and welcome them to the local TV multiplex.  This announcement strengthens the commercial model for local TV broadcasters up and down the UK,” said Ed Hall, founder and CEO of Comux.

“By selling the capacity for two national channels, including QVC Extra, Comux is creating a long-term revenue stream for local TV which will help in ensuring its sustainability.  The proceeds from the sale go directly to help fund a wider range of services for local television. This shows the Comux business model delivering exactly what it said it would, with public seed funding and private management enabling a long-term future for this new local TV initiative.”
