EuroCableLabs merges with CableLabs

CablelabsEuroCableLabs, the technical standards body for European cable, is to merge into the US CableLabs.

The move means that CableLabs will acquire 14 new MSOs from Europe, Asia and Latin America and become the global body for cable standards.

The announcement of the merger coincided with CableLabs summer conference in Keystone, Colorado.

CableLabs has added nine new European members as a result of the change: Sweden’s Com Hem, Norway’s Get, Germany’s Kabel Deutschland, and TeleColumbus, Austria’s Liwest, Spain’s Ono, Denmark’s YouSee, the Netherlands’ Ziggo and Portugal’s Zon Multimédia. Leading operator Liberty Global was already a member of CableLabs.

CableLabs president and CEO Phil McKinney said the organisation would now be able to work on the forthcoming DOCSIS 3.1 standard to create a unified specification globally.
