HbbTV looks to up global deployment

The HbbTV consortium is launching a marketing campaign in a bid to increase awareness of the broadcast standard and accelerate global deployment.

Newly appointed co-chairs of the consortium’s marketing group, Kirk Edwardson and Régis Saint Girons, have been tasked with helping advance the standard and working with HbbTV members.

Edwardson is currently also the head of marketing and sales engineering at Espial, while Saint Girons is CEO of httv and has more than 20 years of experience in the middleware and digital TV industry.

The HbbTV consortium is a pan-European initiative aimed at providing an open standard for the delivery of broadcast and broadband services through connected TVs and set-top boxes. It was formally established in 2010 and is made up of more than 60 TV broadcasters and consumer electronics companies.

The standard is already deployed in various European countries including Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Turkey. Future HbbTV deployments have also been announced in Europe, Australia, Malaysia, and Vietnam.
