Lovefilm launches on Nintendo Wii U

Following last week’s launch on the Nintendo Wii, OTT video-on-demand service Lovefilm has launched on the games console provider’s new high-definition Wii U device.

Lovefilm subscribers can now access the service from the Wii U dashboard and search and browse titles. Users can also make use of the Watch List feature, allowing them to add titles in the streaming library to a personalised queue for easy access later.

The Lovefilm Instant app also makes use of second screen functionality provided by the Wii U console. Subscribers can view video content on both the TV and GamePad or access information about films and shows when browsing the Lovefilm Instant library.

Separately, Nintendo has chosen technology provider Access’s NetFront NX webkit-based browser as the browser engine for the Wii U. The NetFront browser is already used in the Nintendo 3DS device. The browser supports the latest Web technologies, including HTML5 Canvas, web storage, web messaging and server-sent events.

“We are delighted that NetFront Browser NX has been selected for the new Wii U game console, following its use in the Nintendo 3DS,” said Nobuya Murofushi, president and CEO, Access. “We will support the spread of the Wii U in the global market, as well as continue helping to further energise the game market.”
