End of the road for Moldova International

Moldovan state broadcaster Teleradio-Moldova has decided to shut down its international channel Moldova International in a move that could save the cash-strapped organisation about MDL2.5 million (€160,000) a year, according to press reports.

The channel, which began broadcasting in 2007 and was aimed at the Moldovan diaspora audience, will cease transmissions at the beginning of next year.

Between 600,000 and one million Moldovans – about a quarter of the country’s population – are believed to be living and working abroad, the majority illegally, with Russia and Italy among the more popular destinations for migrants.
