Hulu to sell original series internationally

Online video service Hulu is to start selling its original series to international broadcasters after striking a deal with distributor FremantleMedia Enterprises.

This follows Hulu’s aggressive expansion into original content with series including political comedy Battleground, which is produced by (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb, documentary series A Day In The Life, produced by Morgan Spurlock, and Richard Linklater travel series Up To Speed.

David Ellender, global CEO, FremantleMedia Enterprises, told DTVE sister publication TBI: “Hulu wants to build a stronger line up of original programming; we’ll look at investing in some of their IP. Across these platforms we’re seeing a lot of creativity because the [creators] are afforded more freedom.”

FremantleMedia Enterprises will shop Hulu series to international broadcaster, both free TV and pay networks, as well as online video platforms.

Andy Forssell, senior vice-president, content, Hulu, said: “As we expand into original series, we’re collaborating with some of the world’s greatest independent storytellers to make and distribute great TV.”

The two companies announced the deal at the SXSW event in Austin, Texas.
