Sky boosts Go with Android launch and Sky Entertainment channels

BSkyB’s TV anywhere service Sky Go is to launch on Android phones and Sky is to expand the range of content available via Sky Go on smartphones and the iPad with the addition of Sky Entertainment channels, starting with Sky Atlantic.

According to Holly Knill, head of Sky Go, Sky Player and mobile TV at BSkyB, Sky Go will be made available on a selection of Android smartphones starting with Samsung Galaxy and HTC handsets.

“We fully appreciate how much Android users have been looking forward to the launch of Sky Go, and we’ve done everything we can to make sure that our bespoke design for Android handsets is worth waiting for,” said Knill.

The Sky Atlantic channel has now been launched on Sky Go, to be followed by Sky 1, Sky Living and Sky Arts 1 within the next month. This will be followed by Sky’s new Formula 1 channel in March.

Knill said on a blog posting that Sky Go achieved a record audience of 3.1 million live views on January 22 thanks to the popularity of key English Premier League matches between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United and Arsenal.

Knill also said that Sky’s forthcoming launch of a public Wi-Fi service, based on its acquisition of The Cloud, would enable Sky Go users to experience an improved viewing experience.
