Swisscom to expand Zurich fibre network

Swisscom has signed a deal with utility provider ewz to jointly expand Zurich’s fibre-optic network.

Swisscom and ewz will offer passive, unlit fibre-optic cable, thereby complying with one of regulator ComCo’s requirements. Swisscom is funding 60% percent of the basic connection costs at a cost of about CHF300 million (€148 million). Subject to approval from the municipal council, work will be completed by summer 2012.
