Sony’s Stringer: industry needs to focus on new kind of TV

TV manufacturers will need to focus their efforts on “a different kind of TV set” to reverse losses, according to Sony CEO Howard Stringer.

Stringer used a breakfast hosted by the Wall Street Journal to say that manufacturers could not continue to sell loss-making TV sets and acknowledged that he had no doubt that Apple was working on the development of a new kind of TV platform. He said that a great amount of R&D effort was now going into “a different kind of TV set”.

Sony last week warned that it could lose as much as US$1 billion this year.
