There is room in the German advertising market for a third major player alongside RTL and ProSiebenSat.1, according to former RTL chief Helmut Thoma, who is planning the launch of a new national network of regional channels, dubbed Volks TV (‘People’s TV’).
In an interview with the Infosat.de website’s Digitalmagazin, Thoma said that it would be possible to take a slice of the existing advertising pie, which was in any case growing. He said the concept of Volks TV would be developed over time, but that the channel would be unencrypted and would be delivered by satellite and cable, including analogue cable, to secure maximum reach.
